Course description:
Students will work with found objects, and integration of different ideas and methods from feminism theory in the creative process. Seminars and lectures will be held in relation to the course subject. The course seeks to explore ideas around disrupted domesticity, home as internal exile, and the potential for domestic objects to subvert, upset, and deconstruct traditional understandings of women’s relationship to home.
Program of the Workshop:
Day One, March 30th, 14:00. Artist's talk. Sculptural practice and the agency of objects.
Day Two, March 31st, 14:00. Practical session. Making sculpture from domestic materials and exploring the ability of objects to perform narratives of domesticity and to return the unresolved past.
Day Three, April 1st, 14:00. A seminar session. The history, theory and practice of feminism and domesticity.
Paula Chambers is currently teaching at Leeds Arts University, and is also studying for a practice-led PhD at Middlesex University. Working primarily with found furniture, Paula’s practice is sculptural, object based, and deals with concepts around feminism and the contemporary domestic. Her art practice is focused on three-dimensional objects that do not conform to established notions of form and space, but are rather found at a car boot sale or charity shop. Paula has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally; with a back catalogue of solo shows, including most recently “ Transcendental Housework” at Stockport Art Gallery, and “Domestic Pirate” at Show Space, London. Paula peer reviews for several academic journals including MaMSIE, Studies in the Maternal, has presented at international conferences, and has been published in JourMS, an interdisciplinary journal focusing on the maternal in contemporary culture.
