Materials / software utilized: in the workshop will be: animation lightboxes, markers, paper A0 and A4 formats, tablets, scanner, Photoshop, photo camera, Scanning System.
The outcome of the workshop is expected to be short animated sequences, demonstrating students capacity to successfully master the key focus areas of the workshop.
Course description:
(a 5-day animation workshop lead by Dr. Cavalheiro, Lilas and Bukauskas)
Objective of the workshop is to introduce the principles of animated movement to the students with strong artistic foundation but little or no previous experience in animation. During the workshop participants will be introduced to the scanning technology and the principles of character design. The main focus areas of the workshop are:
A. To deliver a graphically articulated character (creature, object, animal, letter, symbol or humanoid)
B. To animate the combined elements of design in a way which corresponds to the concept of the character.
C. To utilize the 3D scanning methodology in a context of 2D animation.
D. To successfully merge 2D animated character in a virtual reality environment.
SCHEDULE
Monday, 21 September ---
9.00 -10.00 Introduction to the workshop, short presentation of the leaders of the workshop, Dr. Cavalheiro, Mr.Bukauskas and Mr. Lilas, major artistic concepts and technical framework of the forthcoming activities. Historical examples, state-of-the-art and extrapolation of future tendencies (Public).
11.00 to 13.00/ 14.00 to 18.00 H - Open ended. Brainstorming of the key concepts of the individual projects. Formation of the working groups, establishment of the work-flow. Introduction to scanning technique. Exercises led by Cavalheiro and Lilas: moving image and frame by frame (projections and experiments) and analysis of mapping surfaces in virtual characters (demonstration of motion character skills)
Tuesday, 22 September ---
Demonstration on mapping models:. Animating cycles in Photoshop or by hand. Creating differences of time, persistence, rhythm, space and aspect in animated sequences.
Creative scanning. Analyzing 2D and 3D models. Working with fragments of the scan. Applying different scaling aspects to concrete parts of the scans.
Wednesday, 23 September ---
Choosing the best application for the base of the information produced. Mapping models, creating movements and transformations. Work inside model themselves: scale, dissolving, transparency, texture, reaction to light. How to animate scanned models, how to mix scanned objects with hand drawn.
Thursday, 24 September---
Studying concrete movements with characters. Analyzing results and applying small variations to movement.
Friday, 25 September---
Work on projects in teams. Individual mentoring.
Saturday, 26 September ---
Finalizing the projects, final presentation of the student projects (public).
