Course description
Information about the physical and psychological health benefits of daily walking, step-counting competitions and the accumulation of virtual points for daily walking is seen regularly in the public sphere. In artistic practice, walking together or alone takes on a much broader meaning. Walking and being together - embodies an artwork in each participant.
Artists use various walking practices in their work or research in the context of the growing concern about ecological and migration crises, urban planning decisions that are not compatible with natural human movement, new forms of being together in the virtual, post-pandemic situation and alienation. In light of these issues (and many more), the workshop will focus on embodied, participatory and collaborative art practices, using walking as a key tool.
The tutor of the workshop, Dr. Vitalij Červiakov, has been studying walking as an artistic practice for over 15 years. He is not only actively involved in the Lithuanian contemporary art field by developing structured and site specific participatory walks, but also conducts scientific/artistic research on the topic at the VAA Art Institute, describing walking as one of the most immediate ways of experiencing and thinking about space.
Only working your leg muscles will not be enough. The practice will also include guest lectures, collaboration with local institutions and enjoying the warmth of Nida's dunes!
An important day for the practice is 22 September, which is not only the autumn Equinox but also the day of Baltic unity and the International Car Free Day. For the sixth time in a row, this day will be the day of the all-day walk across the Curonian Spit, organized by Dr Vitalij Červiakov for the students of the Photography, Animation and Media Art department in Vilnius Academy of Art. This is a challenge that everyone who takes part overcomes in one way or another!
