Course desription: This is the 6th ghostographic workshop, initiated by the popular request after our last (fifth) “smashing hit” session here in Vilnius.

Dogs of war are out there. What can we (as artists) do about it? During this session we will continue to gather and conceptualise instead of depict or represent. We will try to inflict an imprint of the Zeitgeist of Vilnius—April 2022 on ourselves.

The key focus this time will be on the role of an artist in times of upheaval. Does directly serving the right cause and becoming somewhat propagandistic about it undermine artistic integrity, and therefore diminish an overall impact? On the other hand, by staying withdrawn, vague and indirect, wouldn’t we miss the point we’re trying to make? Also, do we need to “make the point” or deal with historic background, political realities at all?

Adjacent thematic will be good table manners of artistic research (if there is any), i.e. how to do it properly or improperly, and what tangible outputs, artistic qualities or personal enlightenments it could possibly lead to. Does it (artistic research) open up special plateaus, unreachable otherwise (cognitively or sensorily)? For the sake of an argument we will explore not just enlightened scholarly avenues leading to a “good” research, but also curvy paths of a “bad” research.

Academic world is obsessed with the output. Art Academies encourage students from day one to produce and to show. Metabolic cycles get shorter and more intensive. Instead we will take a slow route— trying to position ourselves in earnest, then listen, look, record, depict, think and then discuss our findings back in the class. Without going on a slippery slope trying to define what art is, we will try to find what it is good for, especially in times of historical “turning point”.
