Course description: Reconstructing Reality (RR) / 3rd International Media Refuge is a joint event of Caspar-David-Friedrich Institute of the University of Greifswald, Academy of Media Arts, Cologne and Vilnius Art Academy, RR will attempt to juxtapose factual and remembered. The human perception is often followed by various factors that interfere with the objectivity of experience of seeing, hearing, smelling… Those interfering factors ought to be examined by the students during the workshop. The aim is to get to a point where the modification and reassembly of certain impressions indeed form a new way of perception of reality.

The practical idea of our project is to observe and perceive Nida’s surroundings, to see and understand its distinctive character. This thought process will be accompanied by recording using various media from the traditional ones like text, drawing, gesture/movement, photography, also video and sound recordings to such a new forms as 3D-Scanning/photogrammetry.

The rethought, reconstruction and reassembly of the fragments may be part of work's presentation itself, meaning the projection of the imagery within the nature it arose from. Just like in the works of the institutes name-giver Caspar David Friedrich, the goal is to create what is possible with the tools that are at hand while using the visible and the seen in order to create new trains of visual thought inside the field of uncharted new media. When it comes to the output, please do not forget variety of different approaches other than light-projection/sound in the designated white cube, and think of outdoor, performative, embedded and situated strategies.

The students will work mostly by themselves exploring different media in a mixture of outdoor-activity and an indoor-input-sessions, interlaced with periodic brainstorms around the bonfire. The project is focused on fostering collective thinking tied to the development of a symbiotic relationship of perception, creative synthesis and projection back onto a living screen, the nature itself.
