Course description
What is a sound?

The first, still existing, recorded sound was created by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville in 1860 in Paris. Sixteen years earlier, in 1844, Nils Månsson Mandelgren founded the Söndags-ritskola för Handtverkare (Sunday Drawing School for Craftsmen) in Röda bodarna (the Red sheds). Since then, the Konstfack school has operated at eight different addresses before the school, its library and archives moved to Telefonplan in 2004.

Despite the fact that we have been able to record sound for 164 years, there are today very few sounding objects preserved in Konstfack's archives. Maybe there is still information about sound in the many works of art, pictures, objects, books, letters and other text documents that are in the archive?

The course investigates, on several different levels, what a sound object is, and can be based on questions about conservation, archiving and sustainability through seminars, lectures, site visits, and workshops. In addition to this, there is also individual and group-based practical, creative work.
